Spongebob and Patrick manage to earn three wishes from The Flying Dutchman, after they steal his dining sock, which he apparently cannot eat without. That obsession eventually leads him to bring Patrick and Spongebob on a real treasure hunt, using the map from the board game. The trio never really know where they're supposed to be going, but end up stumbling right onto the "X" that marks the spot. As they begin to dig, Mr. Krabs' greed comes out, and he tells them becuase he is the captain, the treasure all belongs to him. As if on cue, The Flying Dutchman appears looking for his treasure, and Mr. Krabs greedily blames the digging on Patrick and Spongebob. It blows up in his face, however, when the Dutchman gives each of them gold coins as a reward for digging for him.

This is a Halloween episode, which sees Spongebob trying to prevent getting scared by convincing himself that scary equals funny. The Flying Dutchman, who loves Halloween, is irritated to hear Spongebob laughing when he should be screaming. He decides to take Spongebob's new theory as a challenge, and brings he and Patrick aboard his ship for the evening. Spongebob just keeps laughing, no matter how scary it gets, until The Flying Dutchman uses a ghostly mist to steal the souls of all of his friends - including Patrick. Spongebob valiantly tries to save his friends' souls, but inadvertently makes a fool of himself in the process. However, when The Flying Dutchman has a look inside Spongebob's brain, he is horrified to see a naked, baby version of the talkative sponge. The Flying Dutchman is so shaken by this, he sails away, releasing the souls of all of Spongebob's friends.

"The Legend of Boo-kini Bottom" is the first appearance of stop motion animation in the series since the second movie (2015), and it also happens to be the highest-viewed season 11 episode, with 2.21 million viewers.

When he's shouting at his money one night, desperate for it to respond to him, The Flying Dutchman overhears and offers to grant his wish, as long as Mr. Krabs gives up his soul. Mr. Krabs immediately agrees, but his money starts to drive him crazy, because he likes to hoard it, but it wants to be spent. He begs The Flying Dutchman to break the deal, but he refuses.
