Story

Hi my name is Jack!I love people, petting, and all the attention I can get.Car rides, hiking, going for walks, and guarding the yard are some of the things I like to do. I really like stuffed animals, but don’t usually chew them up, just carry them around. I get along with most dogs, but if challenged I will defend myself. I was starved before my foster family took me in, so I guard my food and bones from other dogs. I’m happy to share with my humans though. I love people so much! Currently I live with several dogs from 4-80 pounds and play nicely with all of them. My foster mom would be happy to bring me over to meet your dogs and see if we could be friends. When can we go for a ride?!

Story

Get ready for the greatest love of your life!!! Please learn more about us and our available pets at Robin Hood Animal Rescue. In Max's words:  'Active and playful are two words that describe me. I am not all that sure what happened, but after I had been with my family for a couple of years, they returned me to Robin Hood Animal Rescue.  I probably need a quiet family. Not a dull family, but a family that is not loud or rambunctious. I do fine with other dogs.  After what I went through with my previous adopted family, I am unsure if I can handle young children. So, it would be better if my new family didn't have real young children. Please let me show you what a wonderful boy I can be.” As with all our foster dogs/puppies, Max has been altered, microchipped, and has had his shots. Story

Get ready for the greatest love of your life!!! Please learn more about us and our available pets at Robin Hood Animal Rescue. In Fitch's words: 'Smart (I have had training) and playful would describe me. Give me something to do!!!! I found myself out on the streets. Two kindhearted ladies took me to be scanned and although the animal hospital they took me to would have nothing to do with me after I was scanned, they decided to wait outside in the summer heat until Robin Hood Animal Rescue showed up to take me home with them.  The family who adopted me could not be found. But true to their word, Robin Hood Animal Rescue took me back and now is going to find me a better family. They are upset that family didn't keep their promise to love me and care for me forever. They will be careful that my new family will keep their promise to love me forever. I have to be honest and say that it may take me awhile to trust my new family. But I am sure that with patience and understanding, I will be the perfect fur kid. I have to say that sometimes when folks approach me too quickly, I go on alert: stranger danger mode. I need to be assured that I will be safe.” As with all our foster dogs/puppies, Fitch has been altered, microchipped, and has had his shots. FAQs

Why is adopting a dog cheaper than buying? ›

Many pets in the shelter system are already spayed or neutered and if not, shelters often receive a discount from their participating veterinarian and passes the savings on to the adoptive family. Also, adoption fees are much less expensive than buying from a breeder or pet store.

Is it better to adopt 1 or 2 dogs? ›

For most households, the ideal way to have multiple dogs is to get them one at a time, training and establishing relationships and routines with the first, then adding another once habits are comfortably established, and repeating the process. Having more than one dog can be more than double the fun!

What's the difference between adopting and buying a puppy? ›

Buying a pet from a breeder can cost more than $1000. Adoption from a shelter costs between $50 and $250 and they will also spay, neuter, and vaccinate. That makes shelters much more cost effective. When you buy from a mill you are supporting inhumane conditions in factory-style breeding facilities.

What is the hardest dog to adopt? ›

Most experienced shelter workers will tell you that black dogs are often adopted less than any other coat color. Be it black Labrador Retrievers, Shepherds, Rottweilers, etc., they are often passed over by potential adopters. This discrepancy in adoptions is referred to as “Black Dog Syndrome.”

Are older dogs better to adopt? ›

Senior dogs tend to have a calmer temperament

With the teething days behind them, and having grown out of old habits, senior dogs are more likely to be easygoing. Many senior dogs still have lots of energy, only theirs are less overwhelming and destructive.

What do puppy mills mean? ›

What are puppy mills? Inhumane high-volume dog breeding facilities that churn out puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers. They commonly sell through internet sales, online classified ads, flea markets and pet stores.

Why is adopting from a shelter better than a breeder? ›

Shelters save lives

Animal shelters rescue animals from cases of neglect, feral lives or situations where they are unwanted and help them find a new forever home. Adopting from these places can help give animals a second chance at a great life.

Is it better to have two male dogs or a male and female? ›

Before settling on a breed, think about the gender of the dog. For the happiest dogs and the safest household, opposite sex dogs almost always do best together. Many same-sex combinations of dogs will fight, sometimes to the death. Those who work out a dominance order may not fare much better.

Why do people buy instead of adopt? ›

When people buy dogs rather than adopt, it's usually because they have a particular breed in mind, or because they want to buy a puppy. It's possible to find puppies at rescue shelters, but most dogs get sent there as young adults because families can't handle them.

What is the best age to adopt a puppy? ›

So what is the ideal age for a puppy to be when you welcome him into your home? There are different opinions, as well as a variety of factors, that influence the answer to this question. However, most veterinarians and breeders would put the optimum age to bring home a puppy somewhere between 8-to-10 weeks old.

Should you rename a dog you adopt? ›

The bottom line is that it's the tone of voice that really counts when you address your pets, not the words you say. So it's perfectly fine to change that sound/name to something else, especially if the dog might have negative associations with their “given name” from their previous home.

What dog is most likely to be adopted? ›

Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world; they're also the most adopted.

What is the most popular dog bought? ›

The French bulldog has retained the title and kept the crown for a second year in a row as the number one most popular dog breed in America.

What is the #1 most expensive dog? ›

What is the most expensive dog breed in the world? The most expensive dog ever sold was a red Tibetan Mastiff named Big Splash going for $1.5 million.
